After a timid start, it seems that summer has finally arrived in Porto and the surrounding area. On the one hand, there are those who are happy with the current scenario of high temperatures. On the other hand, there are those who don’t appreciate the heat at all.
So we’d like to present you with a list of suggestions so that you can ‘get over’ the rising thermometers in a fun way. Afternoons spent at the seaside and cool refuges, this article is your best friend for coping with the heat.

Forgetting the heat by the sea
In Invicta, the landscape is divided between the tranquillity of the fresh water of the Douro River and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. So it’s not surprising that Porto is considered the Best Metropolitan Seaside Destination, a distinction awarded by the World Travel Awards in 2024.
In fact, the city’s many beaches mean that it doesn’t take much imagination to find a refreshing spot. In this context, we particularly recommend the three beach areas that have received the “Golden Quality” award:
- Foz
- Gondarém
- Homem do Leme
Diving in a National Monument
Porto has no water parks or impressive outdoor swimming pools. However, there are several options in the surrounding area, such as the Piscina das Marés, in Leça da Palmeira, in the municipality of Matosinhos.
Located about a 20-minute drive from Porto, you can literally dive into the National Monument here. After all, this classification was awarded to the beautiful pools in 2011.
Designed by architect Siza Vieira (winner of a Pritzker Prize), the Piscina das Marés also stands out for having salt water and a privileged view of the Atlantic Ocean.
Seeking refuge in green spaces
Porto’s gardens and green spaces, some of which have won world awards, are ideal for picnics in the shade with friends, a romanticdate or a family evening.
Whatever the case, they are the perfect refuge for hot days, where you can sit and enjoy a good read, surrounded by nature.
In this context, Porto City Park is undoubtedly one of our favorite places. But we also suggest the Botanical Garden, the Crystal Palace Gardens and São Roque Park, among others.
Devouring ice cream
In a cone or in a glass, with classic or unusual flavors, ice cream is always a good option.
In our article on the best ice cream shops in Porto, we highlight Neveiros, Sincelo and Portuense, among others waiting for you.
Enjoy the views from rooftops
After the beach, swimming pool and ice creams, somethingtrendy was missing: rooftops.
In more ‘hidden‘ or trendy places in and around Porto, there are several terraces with incredible views, cocktails and music to accompany them.
Rooftop Flores, Miradouro Ignez, LIFT Rooftop Via Catarina and Renaissance Porto Lapa Hotel are just a few of the many spaces.
If you seek refuge on a beach, swimming pool and/or rooftop, you’ll find it easier to bear the heat. So enjoy the sunny days in and around Porto, but be careful, of course!
