If there’s one thing the people of Porto appreciate, it’s a viewpoint with a privileged view of the Douro River. But with the approach of April’s Pink Full Moon, there’s one more reason to seek out a spot up high, just before welcoming Easter.
Will the moon really turn pink?
The answer is a resounding no! In other words, while the phenomenon is sure to light up the skies over Porto, the colors will always be orange, gold, or reddish. This is because the name “Pink Moon” is purely symbolic.
This name was given by Native American peoples, who, taking seasonal characteristics into account, chose the best names for the different full moons. In this case, the name derives from the appearance of the first spring flowers , known as Phlox subulata (wild pink flower).
When and how can you see it?

The peak of this astronomical phenomenon will occur in the early hours of April 2, at 3:11 a.m. (Portuguese time). However, the Pink Full Moon can already be admired before that night. And if weather conditions cooperate, the Moon will appear larger and brighter than usual.
Where to view the Full Moon?
Ideally, you should look for places away from light pollution or with open horizons, such as:
- The Serra do Pilar Viewpoint (in Gaia)
- Passeio das Virtudes
- Vitória Viewpoint
- Pérgola da Foz, among others.
When is the next full moon?
In May, there are not one, but two full moons to liven up the astronomical calendar: the first is scheduled for May 1 (Flower Moon); and the second for May 31 (Blue Moon).
