One of the most anticipated moments of the year is about to arrive. We’re referring, of course, to the solar eclipse on August 12. However, the excitement of observing this astronomical phenomenon must not take precedence over safety.
What does this mean? A simple mistake can cause permanent damage to the retina, so we’ve put together some tips that eye care specialists have shared with us. The goal is to avoid putting your health at risk. Shall we take a look at some of the recommendations?
The practical guide to what you need to know

To protect your vision, strictly follow these tips:
- Forget “home remedies”
- ISO12312-2certificationis your only shield
- Get your eclipse glasses checked
- The right way to put on and take off your protective gear

- Be mindful of screens and lenses
- Be extra vigilant with children and keep them under constant supervision.
There’s one very important detail you really need to keep in mind: an eye injury caused by the sun (solar retinopathy) doesn’t cause any pain at the time. This is because our retina simply doesn’t have pain receptors. But what’s the big problem? Symptoms of damage can take hours or days to appear.
If for any reason you were careless about protection or if your gaze accidentally strayed toward the sun during the eclipse, you need to pay close attention to your body. Be on the lookout for any of these signs in the hours or days that follow:
- Sudden blurred or unfocused vision
- The appearance of a dark spot or a blind spot right in the middle of what you’re looking at
- Distorted images or changes in color perception.
If you notice any of these changes, don’t rub your eyes and seek an immediate evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
