With the arrival of August, many Portuguese are already enjoying moments of relaxation by the sea, or in the middle of nature, depending on their tastes. However, in addition to vacations, this is also the perfect time to contemplate astronomical events.
If you’re in the mood to look at the sky and take lots of photos, get ready, because the Sturgeon Full Moon is coming. Although it reaches the peak of its phase on Saturday (the 9th), the night of August 8-9 is recommended for the best view.

Why is it called the Sturgeon Full Moon?
According to the Starwalk website, theSturgeon Moon got its name from the Native American tribes who lived near the Great Lakes.
For many indigenous people, this was their favorite time of year to catch sturgeon, a famous freshwater fish; hence the origin of this name.

Perseid meteor shower
The Perseids are one of the most popular and eagerly awaited meteor showers of the year, due to their high activity that can reach up to 100 meteors per hour during their peak (scheduled for the night of August 12-13).
Although the proximity of a full moon and a meteor shower sounds like an idyllic combination, the truth is a little different. In other words, at the peak of the Perseids, the Moon will be more than 90% illuminated, which will affect the visibility of the fainter meteors, but won’t prevent you from seeing the brighter ones!
