Despite the rainy days and low temperatures, the truth is that going to the theater is always a good reason to leave the house, especially if it’s to see the great Ruy de Carvalho up close. Aged 97 and with a career spanning more than seven decades, the actor returns to Porto with “A Ratoeira”.

About the play
The play takes to the stage of the emblematic Coliseu Porto Ageas this Wednesday, January 22, starting at 21h00. Produced by the Yellow Star Company, “A Ratoeira” tells the story of a crime committed in a hotel, which makes its guests and owners suspects.
It’s a narrative full of suspense and mystery, based on an authentic literary phenomenon by Agatha Christie. Also, did you know that “The Mousetrap” is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the play that has been on stage for the longest time?
Ruy de Carvalho: a living legend
In fact, another aspect to note is the longevity of Ruy de Carvalho’s career, considered the “oldest active actor” in the world. Born on March 1, 1927, in Lisbon, his name needs no introduction.
His first steps were taken in amateur theater. However, his professional debut came in 1947, in Roger Ferdinand’s comedy “Rapazes de hoje”, at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. Since then, with a career spanning more than 70 years, his work and awards have added up.
Ruy de Carvalho has given body and voice to countless characters, but not even that has made him lose the humility that has always characterized his personality and career, as exemplified by the following statement:
[Even at 75 years old and ten months into his career], nothing is allowed now. We have to have a lot of respect for what we do. The nerves are gone, but there’s always respect,” commented the actor in a recent interview with the program “Bom Dia Alegria”, broadcast in the morning on the V+ channel.
Cast and production of “A Ratoeira”
Along with Ruy de Carvalho, “A Ratoeira” also features other well-known names, such as Elsa Galvão, Luís Pacheco, Sofia de Portugal, João Vila, Sérgio Moura Afonso, among others.
Paulo Sousa Costa is also responsible for the staging, in a production that has the Yellow Star Company’s seal of quality.
