“Come e vaza”: the new pizzeria on Marginal da Foz features 48-hour-risen dough and flavors inspired by Porto’s cachorrinhos

Porto has gained a new spot where you can slow down the pace of everyday life, take in a beautiful view, and savor every bite. VAZA has set up shop on Marginal da Foz, just a few steps from the Douro River, and offers a simple concept: great pizza, quality ingredients, and a place where you’ll want to linger.

Behind the project are Vera and Patrick Jongenelen, who have been running Picaba Natural Café for nearly two decades. VAZA was born from this experience in the restaurant business, with the intention of creating a concept designed primarily for those who live in the city.

It all starts with the dough, which undergoes a slow fermentation process lasting at least 48 hours. The goal is to create a light and flavorful base that takes center stage just as much as the toppings. The menu features both classic pizzas and less obvious combinations. There’s the Pepperoni and Honey and the Burrata and Pesto, but also the Porto Picante, inspired by Porto’s famous hot dogs, and the Cantábria, which brings the flavors of the sea to a less conventional setting.

To drink: the menu includes a selection of wines and classic cocktails such as the Moscow Mule, Mojito, Port and Tonic, Aperol Spritz, Limoncello Spritz, Espresso Martini, and Negroni, as well as non-alcoholic options.

For every hour of the day: with the river right in front, the restaurant adapts to the moment. It’s perfect for a quick lunch, a pizza in the middle of the afternoon, a cocktail after a walk along the Marginal, or a dinner that lingers over a glass of wine.

Details about the space

The atmosphere: the space is contemporary and well-curated, yet relaxed, with its own distinct design, color palette, and identity, and a constant connection to the river and the sea. It welcomes residents, visitors, and anyone on their way to the beach.

The name comes from that, too. “Vaza” refers to the movement of the pizza as it comes out of the oven and to the tide that rises and ebbs right next door. The restaurant’s motto is “Eat and go.”
