If you’re waiting for a rural paradise to visit as soon as the weather improves, the village of Sistelo, located less than two hours from Porto (75 miles), is a destination to consider. On the other hand, if you prefer hustle and bustle and a bohemian atmosphere, then you’re better off staying in Invicta.
Known as the ‘Shangri-La of Minho’ due to its unspoiled beauty and remote location, the ‘little Portuguese Tibet’ is not exactly a secret, but even so, this natural gem is always worth visiting, especially in spring.
The small village in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez represents the essence of the heart of Alto Minho and impresses any visitor with its green terraces. In fact, its landscape surprised even one of the greatest names in Portuguese literature: José Saramago (Nobel Prize for Literature).
Why is it called ‘Portuguese Tibet’?

In 2017, the Minho village was considered one of the ‘7 Natural Wonders of Portugal’. Since then, its fame and tourist visits have grown. However, one question remains: why is Sistelo known as the ‘Portuguese Tibet’?
Undoubtedly, this analogy was inspired by the many terraces that exist here. These are agricultural structures built over centuries for cultivation in mountainous terrain. The visual effect is stunning and visible from miles away, making this setting reminiscent of a ‘little Tibet’.
What to visit on a trip to Sistelo?

The beauty of Sistelo has already been mentioned in a National Geographic article and was highlighted in the “Best Hidden Gems in Europe” list by the “European Best Destinations” portal . With so many mentions and distinctions, it is obvious that this is a special tourist destination . But, after all, what is there to visit here?
Of course, the terraces inspire many photographs. However, it is worth wandering through the narrow streets of the small village and experiencing its bucolic atmosphere up close , starting with the granaries – evidence of a communal past. The traditional granite houses, stone crosses, and public fountains also attract attention. However, one of our favorite moments was visiting the viewpoints to better contemplate a landscape that looks like something out of a Monet painting.
During our tour, one of the places we enjoyed the most was the Casa do Castelo do Sistelo, a revivalist mansion built in the 19th century, which belonged to the first Viscount of Sistelo, Manuel A. Gonçalves Roque. Today, the space functions as an interpretive center and is well worth a visit. In addition, if you enjoy walking, we recommend an “immersion” in the Sistelo Trail or the Vez Ecovia ( with a total length of 32 km).
How to get there from Porto?

There are some truly incredible villages to visit near Porto, but if you want a weekend getaway for the mild spring days, then it’s worth traveling the 120 km to Sistelo. The fastest and most convenient way to get there is by car.
To get there , take the A3 towards Braga and Valença . Stay on the highway until you reach the exit for the IC28, which connects directly to Arcos de Valdevez. Then, take the EN202 and later the CM1243, on a route that is signposted and winds through the mountains of Alto Minho.
When you arrive at your destination, it is important to bear in mind that the streets are quite narrow, so you should park your car in one of the car parks located on the edge of the parish and walk the rest of the way.
