August in Porto means streets packed with tourists, but for music festival lovers, it’s time to head elsewhere. Still, there are destinations that festivalgoers from Porto might want to consider. An example? The country’s most famous natural amphitheater: the Vodafone Paredes de Coura festival grounds.
The festival kicked off on Wednesday, August 12 (the same day as the solar eclipse), and runs through Saturday, the 15th. Located about 115 km from Porto, we’ve put together a brief, helpful guide for those still planning to hit the road, or for those already there enjoying the atmosphere and taking a dip at Taboão River Beach.
What you missed at the festival’s kickoff
The 32nd edition kicked off on Wednesday with Westside Cowboy opening the Vodafone Stage and Horsegirl headlining the Coura Sem Paredes Stage, before CMAT, Wet Leg, and Kneecap closed out the night.
The most talked-about moment of the day, however, took place around 7:15 p.m., when First Breath After Coma took the stage at the Vodafone Stage accompanied by Salvador Sobral: the timing was no coincidence, as it was deliberately chosen to coincide with the peak of the solar eclipse, around 7:30 p.m., which was even broadcast live on the venue’s screens during the concert.
What’s still to come
There’s still plenty to see. This Thursday, the 13th, the British band Underworld will headline one of this year’s most anticipated concerts, starting around 1:30 a.m., following performances by Hermanos Gutiérrez, Kurt Vile & The Violators, and Aldous Harding.
On Friday, August 14, Bloc Party takes the Vodafone Stage at 10:45 p.m., with M.I.A. closing out the night at 1:00 a.m., following performances by Sérgio Godinho & Os Assessores and Benjamin Clementine. The festival wraps up on Saturday, August 15, with Amyl and the Sniffers closing out the Vodafone Stage, following sets by Thundercat, Meute, and Cate Le Bon.

How to get there from Porto
By car, the most direct route is to take the A3 toward Porto-Valença, exit at Exit 13 for Paredes de Coura, and then continue on the N303 to the town—a trip of about 115 km and just over an hour.
Those who prefer public transportation can take Rede Expressos, which is offering a 10% discount on trips to and from Paredes de Coura between August 11 and 16. There is no train station in the town; the nearest one is in Valença do Minho, about 25 km away. Once in Paredes de Coura, festival wristband holders have access to free shuttles between the campground, the festival entrance, and the town center.
