St. Martin’s Day is celebrated every year on November 11 in Portugal. This means that we are already counting down to the date that marks the peak of the magustos and the traditions linked to the tasting of new wine and roasted chestnuts.
However, you don’t have to wait until St. Martin’s Day to ‘devour’ this autumnal delicacy. All over Porto, the smell of roasted chestnuts can be felt as you stroll through the streets. But do you know where to find them?

Where to find delicious roasted chestnuts?
No fall in Porto is complete without street vendors and their wonderful roasted chestnuts. From the most touristy streets to Foz, not forgetting the Boavista area, this is the perfect excuse to get out of the house, even when São Pedro decides to give us a bit of rain.
Rua de Santa Catarina
Fresh from the charcoal grills, in one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares and tourist attractions, you’ll find more than one point of sale.
You can take advantage of this and start doing some Christmas shopping. After all, we’re on our way to the festive season and this is an area where commerce is booming, whether traditional or not.
In the Boavista area
There are several places in the heart of Porto, in Baixa, where you can find street vendors. But let’s not forget the Boavista area too.
There are usually sales points near the emblematic Casa da Música, or even at the Rotunda – home to one of the city’s most monumental statues.
Roasted chestnuts in Trindade
Trindade Metro station is probably one of the busiest in Porto.
At this departure and arrival point for so many passengers, outside the station, there are usually warm roasted chestnuts.
Next to São João Hospital
At the entrance to São João Hospital, in one of the areas most frequented by university students in Porto, chestnuts sometimes come out hot and delicious.
It’s a good place to stop, especially as it’s further away from the tourist areas.
Near Praça do Império
This part of the city is already becoming a classic. After all, it always feels good to buy a carton of chestnuts and walk with the sea on the horizon, right?
Roasted chestnuts in the Foz area
Foz is one of our favorite areas in the city, perfect for watching the sunset, but also for eating roasted chestnuts.
There are usually street vendors near the Passeio Alegre garden or further along near the Castelo do Queijo.
Clérigos Tower
If you’re in Porto’s historic center, near the city’s ex-libris, the Clérigos Tower, take the opportunity to taste the best of autumn!
These are just a few of the usual points of sale in the city, but you can also find others, for example, at Cais da Ribeira overlooking the Douro and beyond.
