The heat wave that has been sweeping Greater Porto invites you to take a dip in the waters of the Atlantic. However, even with thermometers showing high temperatures, it can be difficult to go swimming at the region’s coastal beaches. But the solution might be right next door. And the best part? Without spending a cent, you can cool off in a heated saltwater pool, just a few minutes’ drive from Invicta.
Located at Canide Norte Beach, in the parish of Canidelo, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, the free pool is one of the area’s biggest summer attractions. In operation since 2022, the facility reopened its “doors” to the public for another swimming season on July 2.
Forget about those chills when you get in the water
Measuring about 20 meters long by 25 meters wide, with support huts and a windbreak to protect swimmers from the wind, the pool at Canide Norte Beach is an alternative to the cold sea water. After all, temperatures can hover around 28 and 29 degrees, according to information cited by Público.
A pool for everyone
With the sea just a stone’s throw away, the heated (and free) pool at Canide Norte Beach was initially designed with people with limited mobility in mind , but later the municipality of Gaia decided to expand it for everyone.
With completely free admission, this pool is no more than one meter deep and is very popular in the summer, especially among families with young children.Keep in mind that, depending on the day, you may have to wait in line for a while .
‘Rules’ for smooth operation
However, before entering the facility, you must be aware of a few rules regarding its operation, namely:
- Take a shower and rinse off the sand before getting in
- The maximum stay is 30 minutes
- Capacity: 50 swimmers at a time
- Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
If you want to get out of Greater Porto but still can’t pass up a dip in a heated pool right on the beach, we recommend the one at Praia da Claridade in Figueira da Foz, which reopened at the end of June.
