Line 22 of the historic electric tram will once again run through the streets of Porto next Saturday, August 1, nearly five years after it was suspended. The first trip departs from Carmo at 9:15 a.m. and marks the return of one of the most recognizable routes in the city’s historic center. The line had been out of service since November 2021, when expansion work on the Porto Metro network forced its suspension.
With the infrastructure work now complete, STCP – Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto prepared for the service’s return in July, conducting training sessions for train conductors and test runs to verify the service’s safety and operational conditions.
The famous route
The route is circular and takes approximately 30 minutes: it departs from Carmo, passes through Praça da Liberdade, goes by the Clérigos Tower, and ends at Praça da Batalha, before returning to its starting point.
In addition to its role as a tourist attraction, Line 22 connects with the rest of the tram network: at Carmo, it connects to Line 18, which in turn connects to Line 1 at Massarelos.
Schedules and tickets
The line operates every day of the week, with service every 30 minutes. The first tram departs from Carmo at 9:15 a.m., and the last trip ends at 7:45 p.m. at the same stop.
Two types of fare are accepted: the Passe Andante covering zones PRT1 and PRT2, and the on-board ticket, purchased directly on the tram. The latter costs 6 euros for adults and 3.50 euros for children between the ages of 4 and 12.
Payment for the onboard ticket can be made by bank card —physical or digital, via contactless payment on a cell phone or smartwatch—or through MBway by scanning a QR code.
