Considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and recently designated a National Monument, Livraria Lello usually attracts a veritable legion of visitors and a long line of people waiting at its door. However, if you’ve tried to enter in recent days and couldn’t, or if you’ve noticed fewer people on Rua das Carmelitas, there’s a reason.
From April 13 through April 19 (Sunday), Livraria Lello is temporarily closed for maintenance work. In fact, this closure had already been announced in February, though no specific dates had been given at the time.
Investing in preservation
Livraria Lello is one of Porto’s biggest tourist attractions, which requires strict management of foot traffic and continuous reinforcement of the building’s structural integrity.
