In Porto there are still cafés and other historic businesses in operation, but in recent times some of them have begun to close down. After the Bolhão Grocery the time has come for the porto and visitors bid farewell to Casa Madureira.
Located in the heart of downtown Porto, on the iconic Rua das Carmelitas, Casa Madureira was created in 1944. Since then, he has dedicated his activity to traditional home textiles. However, after eight decades of life, the business was sold.
According to Jornal de Notícias (JN), the Porto commercial establishment has been sold to a Spanish group, but the future of the three-storey building is still unknown.
According to the same source, the traditional deal should close by the end of July. Regarding the reasons for the sale, the same publication quotes the owner, António Madureira, who indicated that there was a lack of people to continue the business.
A brief look at Casa Madureira
Created in the 1940s, Casa Madureira enjoyed a privileged location in downtown Porto, close to one of the city’s most symbolic monuments – the Clérigos Tower.
For 80 years, this traditional business has sold a wide range of home textiles, including towels, aprons, kitchen towels, blankets, sheets and rugs, among other items.
