Just like in other parts of Portugal, there are several initiatives here dedicated to the Seventh Art in open-air settings. From lush gardens to spots with breathtaking views of the Douro, we’ve put together a few suggestions so you can watch movies outside the usual theaters, in the city of Porto and its surroundings.
Far from dark theaters, summer cinema returns to the city with the “Cinema Fora do Sítio” series. The program features ten screenings spread across different public spaces in Porto, bringing the magic of cinema directly to neighborhoods and outdoor gardens.
The lineup is divided into two categories: Fridays are dedicated to feature-length films in their original language with subtitles—ranging from political thrillers to Oscar winners—while Saturdays feature animated films dubbed into Portuguese for younger audiences. To complete the experience under the stars, every screening includes the classic free popcorn.
When the days get longer, you just want to swap dark theaters for outdoor screenings. After nine seasons lighting up screens in Lisbon, Cine Society heads north and sets up its summer cinema at WOW, the cultural district of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The venue hosts a total of 92 screenings, combining movies, drinks, food, and a direct view of the Douro River. The lineup aims to appeal to different generations, including iconic romantic comedies, cult classics, and arthouse films.
