Today, the Pestana Palácio do Freixo needs no introduction, whether as a luxury hotel, a monument, or as a frequent venue for the famous Candlelight concerts. But what was its past like? Why are there such varied atmospheres within the hotel’s premises? And is it possible to schedule a visit?
To begin with, we must go back to the 18th century. After all, it was around this time that D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha commissioned the palace from the renowned architect Nicolau Nasoni, who was also responsible for the Clérigos Tower.

This is one of the finest examples of Portuguese Baroque architecture, featuring a rectangular floor plan with turrets at each corner and four distinct facades, as well as access to theDouro River through Italian-style gardens. Anyone passing through the Freixo neighborhood can witness the sumptuousness of the building’s facades.
For a long period of time, the palace enjoyed moments of splendor and had several owners. After D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha, it passed to his younger brother, and was eventually sold in 1850 to António Afonso Velado (the future Viscount of Freixo), who added an Arabic touch to the interior decorations.
As for the outdoor spaces, one of our favorite spots was, without a doubt, the Italian Garden. With a panoramic view of the Douro River, it makes you want to spend the whole day there.

Fun Facts About the Pestana Palácio do Freixo
Chapel
Another of the Pestana Palácio do Freixo’s “hidden crown jewels” is the private chapel, believed to have belonged to the families of the former owners. Access is reserved for guests and special events held on the premises.
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the chapel features a striking altar and, in particular, a magnificent dome. It is a place that invites pure reflection.

Former factory, the accommodations area
Later, at the end of the 19th century, the property was purchased by the Companhia de Moagens Harmonia, and a factory was built next to the Palace. In fact, this former industrial area is now where the guest accommodations are located.
One of the things that most pleasantly surprised us was learning that the 18th-century building has been designated a National Monument. In fact, the Palace houses some catering, logistics, administrative, and management services. Above all, however, the desire to preserve its historical legacy prevails .
For example, the Douro Room is where candlelit performances take place during the colder months.
