Located on the banks of the River Douro, about 4km from the city center, the Pestana Palácio do Freixo has emerged as one of the city’s most important luxury hotels. However, this building is much more than that. Its exterior and interior hold stories from other times. It is also one of Porto’s most beautiful monuments.
We took a guided tour of its various nooks and crannies, immersing ourselves in a journey through time that brought us many curiosities. From Nasoni’s Baroque to Fernando Távora‘s requalification, there is a lot to (re)discover and, above all, to contemplate facing the river.
History of the Pestana Palácio do Freixo
Nowadays, the Pestana Palácio do Freixo needs no introduction, whether as a luxury hotel, a monument or as a frequent venue for the famous Candlelight concerts. But what was it like in the past? Why are there such chameleon-like atmospheres in the hotel’s facilities? And is it possible to schedule a visit?
To begin with, we need to go back to the 18th century. After all, it was around this time that D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha commissioned the Palace from the renowned architect Nicolau Nasoni, who was responsible for the Clérigos Tower.

This is one of the most beautiful examples of the Portuguese Baroque, featuring a rectangular plan with turrets at each angle and four distinct façades, as well as access to the River Douro through the Italian-style gardens. Anyone passing through the Freixo area can see the sumptuousness of the building’s façades.
For a long time, the Palace enjoyed moments of splendor and knew several owners. After D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha, it passed to his younger brother and was eventually sold in 1850 to António Afonso Velado (future Viscount of Freixo), who added an Arab touch to the interior decorations.
As for the outdoor spaces, one of our favorite spots was undoubtedly the Italian Garden. With a panoramic view of the Douro, it makes you want to spend the whole day there.

Curiosities about the Pestana Palácio do Freixo
Chapel
Another of the ‘hidden crown jewels’ of the Pestana Palácio do Freixo is the private chapel, believed to have belonged to the families of the former owners. Access is reserved for guests and special events organized on site.
Dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, the altar and especially the magnificent dome stand out. A place that invites pure reflection.
Former factory, the accommodation area
Later, at the end of the 19th century, the property was bought by the Harmonia Milling Company and a factory was built next to the palace. In fact, today this former industrial area is where the guest accommodation is located.
One of the things that surprised us most, on the positive side, was learning that the 18th century building has been classified as a National Monument. In fact, the Palace is home to a number of catering, logistics, administration and management services. Above all, however, is the desire to preserve the historical legacy.
For example, the Douro Room is where the Candlelight concerts are held during the colder seasons.

With a variety of exclusive treatments, from invigorating massages to facials and body therapies, it also has a sauna, Turkish bath and heated indoor pool, perfect for unwinding.
Candlelight Concerts
However, you can take advantage of the Candlelight concerts to get a closer look at this monument. Upon entering the building, we were immediately overwhelmed by the lights, colors and richness of the surrounding decoration.
Whether at the Candlelight Open Air, under the faint light of thousands of candles and with the Douro River as a backdrop, in the idyllic gardens inspired by Versailles, or the shows inside, in the Douro Room.
And we approve of each of them as an intimate and perfect program to do, whether alone or accompanied, surrounded by friends or family and, of course, with your better half. If you’re in the mood to experience or (re)experience an unforgettable evening…
