A year of work and around 1.3 million euros later, the Teófilo Braga Garden, in the heart of Praça da República, reopens with a ‘fresh face’. The historic space has been given a new lease of life, appearing greener and more welcoming than ever.
The refurbishment, carried out by the municipal company GO Porto, has especially enhanced the green areas, with the planting of over 13,000 shrubs and more than 200 new trees, transforming the garden into a true urban refuge.
The landscaping project, designed by Professor Teresa Portela Marques, from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, sought to respect the historical identity of the site, maintaining its traditional essence while adapting it to contemporary needs.

A renovated space for Invicta
Designed so that families and the community can spend more time at the site, the project includes new rest and leisure areas. Wooden benches, drinking fountains, bins and more efficient lighting reinforce not only the comfort but also the safety of the space.
In addition, the old sand paths have been replaced by granite paving, ensuring better accessibility as well as a more harmonious integration with the classic design of the centuries-old Praça da República.

Art, memory and heritage
The redevelopment also includes the repositioning of pieces of public art that are part of Porto’s heritage, such as:
- The iconicBacchus sculpture
- The statues of General Pires Veloso and Padre Américo
- And also the repositioning of Rapto de Ganimedes, which had been ‘loaned’ to Jardim da Cordoaria.
With this intervention, the city of Porto has ‘recovered’ one of its most symbolic green spaces, now greener and more inviting, in a mix of history, nature and art.
