In Porto bathing season only starts on June 15, but if you want to take a dip in other latitudes, there are a few options. For example, how about a getaway to Praia das Rocas? Located less than 2 hours’ drive from Porto (about 175 km), this is considered to be Portugal’s “largest wave pool”.
So distance isn’t exactly a problem for lovers of swimming pools e water parks. In this case, Praia das Rocas, located in the heart of Castanheira de Pêra, is one of the biggest tourist attractions and is about to open its doors to the public.
According to information shared on his Instagram the bathing season in these parts starts earlier, on June 1st, and lasts until September 15th. But what’s so special about this place? And what can you do here? We’ll tell you all about it!

Praia das Rocas: the largest wave pool
Legend has it that this is the largest artificial wave pool in Portugal, with 2100 m2. However, size is not the only feature that catches the eye. After all, Praia das Rocas is set in a real leisure park, on a lake about 1 km long.
This inland beach, 80 km from the coast, is ‘fed’ by the waters of a local stream. Around here, other major attractions include an island with palm trees and a centuries-old bridge. In addition, the privileged view of the Serra da Lousã leaves no one indifferent.
What activities can you do?
In this leisure complex, operated by the municipal company Prazilândia, there are activities for kids and adults. For example, you can go rowing or ride a seagull.
For those who are more adventurous, there is also the possibility of sliding, climbing and abseiling. In addition, Praia das Rocas will have a special program for this year summer.
During the high season, the leisure complex’s schedule includes free aqua aerobics classes. However, this is just one of several initiatives on the agenda, such as:

- Street Food Tour 2023, on September 6th, 7th and 8th

What are the prices for access to Praia das Rocas?
Prices vary according to the period chosen and the ages. To give you an idea, in June and September, entrance fees are cheaper, while during the high season (July and August) they differ a little.

An adult (aged 11 to 64) pays €11 for a full day (in June and September) and €12.50 (during high season). Children/seniors (6 – 10 years old/over 65 years old) pay €8 for a full day (June and September) and €9 (in July and August). There are also specialpacks for families.
