
The benefits of thermal waters have been explored since the time of the Roman Empire, so in Portugal there are several places with links to this (almost) ancient tradition. And one of them is the Termas de Chaves, which has a new feature that promises to attract many visitors.
Since the end of March, the new Aquae Salutem Thermal Complex in Chaves has been the talk of the town. After all, there you’ll find the largest thermal water pools in mainland Portugal, inviting you to take a getaway for your health and well-being. Shall we get to know them better?

What’s so special about this spot?
The thermal complex in Flavi has several highlights that justify a visit, including:
- Outdoor hydrodynamic pools with temperatures between 30ºC and 36ºC
- Sensory showers with thermal variations, including the Ice Fountain
- Sauna
- Turkish bath, among others.
With a capacity for 104 people, the aim is to make this a tourist attraction for the municipality of Chaves, located in the district of Vila Real. Taking advantage of the hot thermal water, which springs up at a temperature of 76 degrees, the new complex makes it possible to carry out thermal treatments all year round.

Termas de Chaves timetables & prices
If you’re looking for moments of deep relaxation, this is the place to go. According to the Termas de Chaveswebsite, there are currently two options:
- Full entrance with access to the hydrodynamic pools, sensory showers, sauna and Turkish bath.
- Partial entrance with access only to the pools
The Termas de Chaves are open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays remaining open for longer, namely from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
As for prices, they vary according to the experiences you choose. However, if you’re more interested in the largest outdoor thermal water pools, you should know that access costs between €16.50 and €30.

How to get there from Porto?
Aquae Salutem is located approximately 150 km from Porto, and the best way to get there is by car, on a journey that takes around 1h40.
To do this, leave Invicta on the A3 towards Braga/Valença. After 30 km, take the A7 towards Guimarães/Vila Pouca de Aguiar. Then travel to the junction with the A24.
On the A24, follow the Vila Real/Chaves direction until you reach the exit for the city. Once there, pay attention to the signs for the Aquae Salutem Thermal Complex, which is next to the local thermal spa.
