Are you planning to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the center of Porto? If you’re heading to Avenida dos Aliados, the epicenter of the free-access party promoted by Porto City Council (CMP), it’s best to take public transport.
That way, you’ll avoid the confusion and traffic restrictions expected on the night of December 31st (Wednesday) to January 1st (Thursday). As in previous years, thousands of people are expected, so security measures will be reinforced, as will transportation.

CP’s special timetables

CP – Comboios de Portugal has prepared a special plan to make traveling easier during the New Year celebrations in Porto.
Between 8 p.m. on December 31 and 8 a.m. on January 1, an additional 19,500 seats will be available on urban trains, allowing those going to Avenida dos Aliados to celebrate the night without worrying about traffic.
This measure complements the reinforcements already announced for the Metro and STCP, guaranteeing more comfortable and safer mobility for everyone.
Safety and restrictions
The Mobility and Safety Plan for New Year’s Eve includes some restrictions on Avenida dos Aliados and the surrounding areas (you can find detailed information here).
As well as only being able to reach the epicenter of the party on foot, security searches by the PSP are planned. It is therefore forbidden to enter with glass cups, pyrotechnic devices or other objects considered dangerous.
