Sport is playing an increasingly fundamental role in the lives of each and every one of us. And the city of Porto has tried to stand out in this regard. After it was officially announced that Invicta will be part of the 2030 World Cup route , there’s more news on the way: Porto and Gaia are in the running for the title of World Capital of Sport 2027.
The information was provided by the Porto City Council (CMP) in a statement, and the candidacy was formalized by both municipalities on December 31, 2024, with the aim of making these cities pioneers in achieving this title for Portugal.
“Promoting sport as an engine of development”
According to the press release, this joint application reflects the commitment of both cities to promote sport “as an engine for social and cultural development”.
According to the same source, “this effort is materialized in concrete actions, such as the creation and modernization of infrastructures, the holding of large-scale sporting events and the implementation of inclusive programs for all age groups”.
With the application formalized, all that remains is to wait, as the two finalists will only be known at the end of January.
