After New Year’s Eve and an agenda full of countless themed activities, it’s now time to embrace 2024. However, that doesn’t mean that the beginning of the year has to be boring, quite the opposite. What to do in Porto in January?
In this article we’ve put together some suggestions for literally all ages. From exhibitions to concerts, new museums and entertainment venues, there’s no shortage of options for getting off on the right foot in 2024. Not forgetting, of course, gastronomic tips. Shall we take a look at the list?
Table Of Contents
Freestyle World Tour
One of the best things to do in Porto in January is a first: the Freestyle World Tour. For the first time in the city, the Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota will serve as the setting for this event, which is different to say the least, scheduled for January 27, at 17:00 and 19:30.
There, you’ll be able to watch the world’s craziest riders perform spectacular moves, such as back flips, supermans, crazy jumps… you just have to see it to believe it! Tickets are now on sale at the usual outlets, with prices ranging from €19.5 to €115.
Candlelight Concerts
The magic of the Candlelight series continues to shine with various candlelit concerts in the city of Porto, at emblematic venues such as the Palácio da Bolsa and the Pestana Palácio do Freixo.
If you’re in the mood to see them, then check out the schedule for January:
“Forever Tango
For those who like music and dance, here’s a good suggestion: the “Forever Tango” show. Scheduled for January 18, starting at 9pm, on the stage of the Coliseu Porto Ageas, it’s a tribute to the roots of Argentine tango.
The production by Luís Bravo, renowned Argentine cellist, conductor and director, features 14 dancers, who in a sensual connection perform the steps to the rhythm of the soloist’s voice and the 11-piece orchestra. Tickets are on sale at the usual venues from €20.
Shows at the MXM Art Center
Do you like a good brunch? Or a delicious dinner? The MXM Art Center, one of Porto’s most dynamic venues, returns in 2024 with two of its most successful initiatives:
- The Cabaret Dinner Unique Xperience, on January 20th (Saturday);
- The Drag Brunch, on January 21 (Sunday).
These are two experiences that take you to the world of burlesque and the Belle Époque, with lots of entertainment and special performances.
There’s also something new: the Dinner Concert, which opens on January 27.
Activities for children (and beyond)
Youngsters don’t like to stay indoors, even on rainy days. So if St. Peter doesn’t decide to give up, don’t worry… there are plans for the whole family!
From trips to aquariums and zoological parks, not to mention games, interactive museums and virtual reality spaces… all you have to do is choose and make January an unforgettable month.
We advise you to consult our complete guide, but we’ll leave you with a few recommendations:
- 3D Fun Art Museum;
- Minigolf Porto;
- SEA LIFE Porto, among other places.
Porto Fashion Revue
After years of absence, Filipe La Féria is back at the Teatro Sá da Bandeira, one of Porto’s most emblematic venues, with “Revista à Moda do Porto”.
The show has a strong social and political critique and presents the audience with a luxury cast, with FF, Filipa Cardoso and Anabela in the main roles.
“Revista à Moda do Porto” is practically sold out, except for January 10 and 19, and tickets are on sale at the usual venues.
Fado Concert at Ateneu Comercial do Porto
Who said that Fado is only about Coimbra and Lisbon? In Porto you can also find several houses dedicated to the music that reflects the Lusitanian soul. But even better, you’ll be able to attend the concert to present Leonor Santos’ new album, “Se me vires por aí”, on January 25 at 21:30.
The event takes place at the Ateneu Comercial do Porto and celebrates the 60-year career of a fado singer from the city of Porto. Leonor Santos was a regular presence in Lisbon’s Fado Houses and traveled the world. She can currently be heard at Casa da Mariquinhas and Arcadas de São João.
Simultaneous Inaugurations of Miguel Bombarda
This year, the Miguel Bombarda Simultaneous Inaugurations are celebrating their 17th anniversary, so there are several events planned throughout the year.
The next date is January 20, from 4pm to 8pm, in Porto’s famous cultural district.
There, you’ll find art galleries, commercial and alternative spaces, exhibitions, guided tours and socio-cultural entertainment. Entry is free.
Immersive experiences
In recent times, immersive experiences have ‘invaded’ Porto’s cultural and leisure agenda. In this context, you can find events for all tastes not only in Porto, but also in the surrounding area, with the “Wild Lights” at Zoo Santo Inácio (municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia).
From the life and work of Van Gogh to the Mysteries of Ancient Egypt, not forgetting “Porto Legends – The Underground Experience”. So get ready to be transported to other dimensions.
