Little by little, news is coming in about the Christmas lights being switched on in Greater Porto (and beyond). After the light show on the historic façade of the Marcolino and the announcement of Gaia Vila Natal, it’s time to share another piece of news: the return of WOW is Christmas.
From November 22 to January 6, 2026, the cultural quarter of Vila Nova de Gaia will once again be the epicenter of many emotions, smiles and surprises for the whole family. With an imposing Christmas tree, live music and a Santa Claus parade, the program is packed with activities.
When (and how) do the Christmas lights come on?
With one of the best views of the Douro River as a backdrop, one of the highlights is the lighting switch-on, scheduled for November 22 (Saturday), starting at 6 . 30pm, at the WOW, which will be illuminated by 7.5 kilometers of lights.
The Central Square will take on new life and color with the impressive 13-meter Christmas Tree. The event will also feature performances by the Be Smart Academy, Be a Legend and Prestige Dance Center, as well as the traditional hot chocolate and mulled wine.
Welcoming the white-bearded old man
On the one hand, if the lighting of the lights promises to motivate lots of photos among the grown-ups, on the other hand, the arrival of Santa Claus is synonymous with pure joy for the youngsters.
In fact, this is the second big moment in the WOW is Christmas program, scheduled for December 7, starting at 16:30.
However, the ‘white-bearded old man’ won’t be arriving alone, accompanied by his ever-helpful elves and artistic entertainment from the Sobral sem Parar dance school.
Free activities for all the family
In a press release sent to Porto Secreto, the WOW organization also highlights other moments and attractions, such as:
- Santa’s House and the Kids Zone, which will be installed next to the Main Ticket Office (on floor 4).
- The Christmas Street Market
- Gastronomic Market and the classic Carousel, in the Central Square
