Porto has seen countless works carried out, whether due to the extension of the Metro network or various municipal interventions. After the city’s renovation of the Praça da República, conservation work is now underway on the iconic Passeio Alegre toilets, as well as on two streets in the ‘movida’ which are to become pedestrianized.
According to a statement from Porto City Council (CMP) sent to Porto Secreto, Cândido dos Reis and Galeria de Paris streets have been undergoing renovation work since October 13. The aim is clear: to transform these iconic areas of Porto’s nightlife into pedestrian-priority zones that are safer and more pleasant for passers-by.
The pedestrianization of Cândido dos Reis

The intervention on Rua de Cândido dos Reis, the responsibility of Porto’s Public Space Office, corresponds to the second phase of a project to pedestrianize the city’s historic center. In this sense, after the streets of Santa Teresa and Fábrica, it is now Cândido dos Reis’ turn.
According to information from CMP, “the work includes lifting and replacing the sidewalk of the street at sidewalk level, removing the bollards and resizing the tree trunks, adjusting them to the current size of the roots”. The estimated execution time is two months.
Restoring the historic design of the Paris Gallery

The Galeria de Paris will be undergoing a thorough refurbishment, which is why the execution period is longer than the intervention at Cândido dos Reis, with a total of 180 days expected for completion. The Galeria de Paris project includes not only better conditions for pedestrian circulation, but also an intervention in underground infrastructures.
In addition, one of the highlights is that the project recovers the historical design of the early 20th century, recreating the pattern of the old Praça de D. Pedro (now Praça da Liberdade) in black and white Portuguese cobblestone.
With these works, the heart of Porto’s ‘movida’ is preparing for a new chapter with more space for strolling.
