Porto is a city full of life, but sometimes you need to disconnect from the urban chaos and slow down the fast pace of daily life. Far from the hustle and bustle, Serralves Park is one of those special places that invites you to breathe in fresh air and immerse yourself in a setting of gardens, lakes, and sculptures. Among its trails, there’s also a wooden walkway where you can stroll at the level of the treetops.
Part of the Serralves heritage complex, designated a National Monument since 2012, the park covers 18 hectares filled with green spaces to explore. Along the various trails, it features some 8,000 specimens of woody plants , representing 230 species and varieties. Beyond offering a connection with nature, Serralves Park also functions as a kind of open-airgallery, with works of art integrated into the landscape.

A park steeped in history
The history of Serralves Park began at the former Quinta do Lordelo, inherited in 1923 by Carlos Alberto Cabral, the 2nd Count of Vizela. Years later, following a visit by the count to Paris, the property began to be transformed through a new project entrusted to the French landscape architect Jacques Gréber. But the Frenchman did much more than that: he created a landscape that continues to amaze visitors to this day.
Developed in the early 1930s, the project blended inspiration from French gardens with a modernized classicism, giving rise to one of the most beautiful green spaces in the city of Porto, which offers a visual narrative to those who explore it. Here, there are countless nooks and crannies that invite you to take plenty of photos, such as the rose garden, the Camellia Garden, and the avenue lined with sweetgum trees.
Walking among the treetops
One of the most breathtaking experiences at Serralves Park is the Treetop Walk. This wooden walkway takes visitors high up among the treetops, along a path that runs between 1.5 and 15 meters above the ground.
Designed by architect Carlos Castanheira, in collaboration with architect Álvaro Siza Vieira ( winner of a Pritzker Prize), the Treetop Walk stretches 260 meters. The walk is short but truly unforgettable, thanks to the immersion in biodiversity and the spectacular view over Serralves Park.
